I don't cook with measuring spoons, etc. but I used to make this for my former husband and he loved it.
Thousand Island
Mayo
Ketchup
a pinch of sugar
sweet pickles diced/ sweet pickle relish
and a drop or two of vinegar if I just use the pickles.
Well the trick here is to just keep tasting till it is what you like.
I find it makes a big difference in the brands I use cause I grew up with those tastes.
I use Best Foods/Hillman's Mayo
Heinz Ketchup
Heinz sweet pickles or sweet pickle relish
My father taught me this recipe many years ago.
THOUSAND ISLAND DRESSING
Take a regular water glass. Pour about 1 inch of pickle juice into the glass (sweet or sour - your choice). Add a ';plop'; of catsup and a ';plop'; of mustard (that equals to about 3 T of catsup and 2 T of mustard). Add fresh ground black pepper and 1/2 tsp celery seed. Add about 1/3 c mayonnaise. Stir well. It's OK to have some white lumps in it - that's the mayonnaise. If you want to perk it up a little, add about 1/3 tsp ground red pepper or cayenne pepper.
That recipe is WONDERFUL with a nice Crab Louie or Shrimp Louie and it really brings out a wonderful flavor with any hard-boiled eggs. You can add it to your potato salad and add cooked and crumbled bacon to the potato salad - very good. That's with the assumption that your potato salad contains potato, onions, pickles, radishes and hard-boiled eggs.
Hi!
I have a tried and tested thousand island dressing that's fool-proof. Mix a dollop of ketchup in mayonnaise (if you'd like it to be a little bit more tangy and more orange-y in color, add more ketchup), add some pickle relish if desired and voila! There's your easy to make thousand island dressing.
For other salad dressings, I'll get back to you. :)
